Dental Hygiene Tips by dental hygienists at Lake Grove Dental
Dental Hygiene Tips by dental hygienists at Lake Grove Dental

After a long week sharing dental hygiene tips with our patients, our dental hygienists, Sheena and Becca sometimes need to get a little fresh air at our local park!

Our dental hygienists are highly trained individuals who assist your Lake Oswego dentist in:

  • analyzing a patient’s oral health
  • recognizing systemic diseases and disorders
  • educating patients
  • teaching patients oral prevention

In honor of our skilled and dedicated dental hygienists and their effort to teach our patients how to care for themselves, we offer some simple tips.

Use the right toothbrush

Regardless of the type of toothbrush you use, always make sure the bristles are extra soft.

How much should you brush your teeth? Two times a day for two minutes is all you need for the process; 30 seconds of gentle brushing per quadrant.

Sonic toothbrushes, which are highly recommended, require no brushing action at all. Simply move the brush from tooth to tooth and they will automatically generate enough sonic action to remove debris, biofilm, and plaque from your teeth.

BURST Toothbrushes - Lake Grove Dental Senior AmbassadorWe love the new BURST toothbrush. The heads are small and the bristles extra soft. See our website (bottom of the home page) for how to order and details.

Rinse after eating (avoid rinses with alcohol), as it removes food particles, biofilm, and bacteria as well. Even just swishing with water after eating can be helpful.

For fresher breath, brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Chew Sugarless Gum

Clinical studies now show that chewing gum, preferably sugarless with xylitol after eating, can help prevent tooth decay, increases the flow of saliva and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth.

Floss, Boss

For those places in your mouth you just can’t get to with the toothbrush, you need to floss every day. When done correctly, flossing removes what’s in between your teeth and deep below the gumline.

See your dental hygienist regularly

The best tip of all? See your dental hygienist regularly. Biofilm, bacteria, and calculus build-up over time and get into places that are hard to reach even with floss. A qualified hygienist will make your teeth sparkle.

Follow these 3 simple tips and your teeth, gums, and systemic health will thank you!
